Differences in cosmological parameters, such as the matter density, inferred from cosmic microwave background (CMB) and baryon acoustic oscillation data (BAO) have attracted considerable attention over the last year. The release of new data sets has led to more precise constraints and CMB-BAO differences have fluctuated around common thresholds of statistical normality; this has spurred discussion of a new possible tension in cosmology, the CMB-BAO tension. In this talk, I give a status report of this potential CMB-BAO tension. I outline how it emerged, track its significance with respect to new data, probe its robustness, and link it to other tensions in cosmology. I present the consequences of interpreting current CMB-BAO differences in the standard model and show how extended models can reduce differences.
